7. Passwords

There is a UNIX password, a Windows password, a Samba password, and a Web account password. You are free to change the passwords individually, but you should bear in mind the following restriction: The Samba password has to match the Windows password so that you can print from Windows and mount your UNIX home directory on Windows automatically upon login. This is so important, since most people tend to change their Windows password only and forget to change their Samba password to match the Windows password, which makes them unable to access their Z: drive or the printer.

Your UNIX password is your email account password, and is not affected by changing your Windows and/or Samba passwords.

To change your UNIX password:

  1. Login to watsup.uwaterloo.ca (using ssh, telnet, rlogin, or X)

  2. At the shell prompt type: passwd

  3. Type your existing UNIX password

  4. Type your new password twice

To change your Samba password:

  1. Login to watsup.uwaterloo.ca (using ssh, telnet, rlogin, or X)

  2. At the shell prompt type: smbpasswd

  3. Type your existing Samba password

  4. Type your new password twice

To change your Windows password:

  1. Login to any Windows 2000 workstation

  2. Press the key combination CTRL+ALT+DEL

  3. Click Change Password...

  4. Type your existing Windows password and the new password twice

  5. Click OK

To change your Web account password:

  1. In your web browser visit the PAMI web site at http://pami.uwaterloo.ca/index.php

  2. Click Login from the horizontal navigation menu

  3. Login to the web site using your existing web account username and password

  4. Once you are logged in, choose Change My Password from the right side menu

  5. Type your old Web account password and the new password twice

  6. Click Update
